No one knows with any precision how
many of the people of Iraq
have died because
of the war,
and their faces are for the most part
known only to their
families and friends. They
too
are present in Unfinished Portrait, which includes an expanse of black surface that could
contain 375,000
portraits, if we had them. Between the lower and upper estimates of
Iraq’s dead,
as
published in academic studies, that number is closer to the
lower.
